About University Consortium on Aquatic Sciences (UCAS)

Agreements for academic collaboration between the College of Oceanography and Environmental Science (COE), Xiamen University (XMU) and the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), The University of Hong Kong (HKU) as well as between the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), XMU and the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS), HKU were signed in the year 2008. Under these agreements, postgraduates from the two universities initiated a joint-university postgraduate association on 3rd November 2008, which was named the University Consortium on Aquatic Sciences (UCAS) 水環境科學研究高校聯盟, based on the consensus of the staff and students from HKU and XMU in the field of aquatic sciences.

The complexity of aquatic environments requires expertise in many different areas as well as different disciplines to truly study and develop comprehensive understanding. UCAS addresses this need for interdisciplinary collaboration by acting as an inter-university platform for scientific communication and collaboration between postgraduates, young scientists and professionals in the many fields of the aquatic sciences. United by the creed “Protecting and Conserving Aquatic Environments through Scientific Collaboration”, UCAS seeks to maintain a strong bond between universities and we hope this collaborative approach may facilitate better protection for our aquatic environment. Therefore, we started with HKU and XMU as a base and seek for further extension to involve more universities from HK and China as well as those in South East Asia in the future. In the light of this, mutual exchanges, knowledge innovation and collaborations in forefront scientific issues among young aquatic scientists are anticipated to be enhanced.
