The 1st HKU & XMU Postgraduate Symposium: Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts on Aquatic Ecosystems
Date: March 2-5, 2009
Venue: The Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS), The University of Hong Kong
The 1st HKU & XMU Postgraduate Symposium was organized to promote academic collaboration between young aquatic scientists from two universities, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Xiamen University (XMU). The aim was to provide a platform for students to exchange their views, research and experience in dealing with natural and anthropogenic environmental problems affecting our aquatic ecosystems.
Throughout this 4-day symposium, the twenty participants from XMU and the fifteen from HKU actively interacted with each other and shared what they knew about different aspects of the aquatic ecosystems. Session one of the symposium focused on the impact of toxins and pollutants on the aquatic environment resulting from human activities. The second session elucidated the ecological changes in a rapidly changing environment, whereas session three explored the potential bioindicators, monitoring techniques and management strategies in dealing with degrading environments. The symposium ended being a huge success! Students not only enriched their knowledge from the presentations and discussions, they also built up close friendships with each through various non-academic activities. We hope the symposium will help to maintain a strong connection between the two universities in the future and that this collaborative approach may facilitate a better protection of our aquatic environment.
We would like to make this symposium an annual event between the two universities and hopefully recruit members from additional universities worldwide.
