Date: March 1-4, 2010
Venue: State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (Xiamen University)

The 2nd HKU & XMU Postgraduate Symposium is the extension of the first joint postgraduate symposium held at The Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) in 2009. It aims to further enhance academic exchanges between young scientists from the University of Hong Kong and Xiamen University. In particular, students can use this platform to exchange their views, research and experience in dealing with natural and anthropogenic environmental problems affecting our aquatic ecosystems.

This year, seventeen XMU students, seventeen HKU students and two guests from Yunlin National University of Science and Technology (Taiwan) were participated in this 4-day symposium. Postgraduates presented their research in the field of aquatic sciences and they also actively shared their opinions towards the dynamic aquatic ecosystem by raising questions and giving constructive criticisms to their fellows.

The first session of the symposium focused on the ecology of the aquatic organisms and their physical environment. Session two investigated the anthropogenic impacts on our aquatic environment. The last session discussed the monitoring and sustainable management strategies of our aquatic environment. Students gave us positive feedbacks as they gained knowledge from others students and they also built up a closer relationship with their fellows.

Besides having presentations from students, the programme included a half-day boat trip to the Jiulong River Estuary and a whole-day guided tour to Tulou! Students enjoyed both trips as they not only could see the natural environment in Xiamen but they also learn about the local culture.

We have established a close relationship between HKU & XMU through the two symposiums in 2009 and 2010. We will continue to have this symposium annually between our two universities and we hope to further extend this connection to other universities in the future. We believe with the closer collaboration between universities at postgraduate level, we can get more opportunity to communicate and share our work with each other, which will promote our knowledge and help protect our aquatic environment in a better way.

Look forward to seeing you in The 3rd HKU & XMU Postgraduate Symposium at Hong Kong in 2011!
